3 Reasons Your Vehicle Engine Might Be Overheating

Blog

Your vehicle is the vessel you use to get you to work, the kids to school, to the grocery store and everywhere else you need to go. While your vehicle might normally work fine, there is always the chance that something could go wrong at the most inopportune time. If you find your vehicle constantly overheating and not running right, there are a few things that might be going on.

The radiator is plugged.

When the radiator gets plugged, it causes the liquid to struggle to circulate in your system. If that happens, your system isn't going to be able to cool down properly. The best thing you can do is to have a specialist take a look at the radiator for you. While it might be as simple as cleaning the radiator out, it might also be something more intensive like having to replace the radiator itself.

The timing is off.

When the ignition system isn't working right, it can cause the vehicle to overheat. Late timing causes the spark plugs to fire the wrong mixture of air and fuel into the system. While timing alone might not cause your vehicle to overheat by more than a few degrees, it can get your engine to the point where something disastrous could go wrong if there is something else going on with your vehicle, such as radiator problems. An auto repair shop could test your vehicle using a diagnostic machine to see if the timing is on and if it needs to be adjusted or not.

The accessory belt is slipping.

The accessory belt is responsible for driving the water pump and making sure your system stays nice and cool. If there is more than a ½ inch of give in the belt, you need to have it replaced or tightened. Another thing to look for is fraying on the belt. A professional can replace the belt in no time for you. Once the belt is tight, your water pump will be able to deliver the cool water your system needs to stay at optimal temperature.

When you see the temperature gauge going to a dangerous level, you need to get your vehicle in to a professional auto shop, like Dean's Automotive Service Center, to have them take a look at it and see what needs to be done to correct the problem. By keeping your vehicle at the right temperature, you can prevent your engine from blowing up.
