2 Signs You Need To Have Your Car's Disc Brakes Inspected As Soon As Possible

Depending on the age, make, and model of your car, it may have a disc braking system. As part of this system, the brakes are comprised of discs on which the calipers push pads to create the required friction to slow and stop your car.

If something is wrong with any of these three main components, your car's brakes will not do their job of stopping your car. To keep from having serious issues, be on the lookout for a couple of signs that you need to have your car's disc brakes inspected by a professional sooner rather than later.

1.  You Hear a Grinding Noise Whenever Your Attempt to Slow Down or Stop Your Car

One sign that you need to have your car's brakes inspected as soon as possible is when you start to hear a grind whenever you attempt to slow down or stop your vehicle. Along with this grinding noise, your car may shake when the brakes are applied, or you may notice hard vibrations when your foot is on the pedal.

If these signs are present, there is a good chance that the pads are worn down, causing the calipers to dig into the discs. If the pads are not replaced immediately, deep groves will form in the discs, making it necessary to have the entire system replaced.

2.  You Feel Your Car Dragging Even When Your Foot Is off the Brake Pedal

Another sign for which you should be on the lookout is the feeling that your car is dragging even when your foot is off of the brake pedal. Along with this feeling that the brakes are constantly engaged, you may also notice that your car tends to pull to one side or the other whenever you try to stop.

If this is the case, the calipers may have been knocked out of alignment and are pushing the pads onto the discs at all times. Since this will cause rapid wear of the brakes and cause stress on your engine, you should have a mechanic look at them as soon as you are able.

If you notice a grinding sound when you step on your brake pedal or feel as though the brakes are still on even when you are not actively engaging them, there may be something wrong with the discs, brake pads, or calipers. Since any issues with the brakes will only get worse with time and will affect your ability to stop your car while driving, you need to have them looked at as soon as possible. Take your car to an auto shop that offers disc brake services to have a mechanic inspect the brakes and discuss with you what needs to be done to fix them if any issues are found.
